Health Benefits

Lion’s Mane provides numerous benefits for mental health. It is widely touted to help with concentration and focus, and may improve memory. As a cognitive enhancer, it can also help with mood and mental health stability. Many use it as a support through stressful times. A growing body of research shows that Lion’s Mane may be a fantastic alternative treatment for anxiety and depression. Similar to conventional medications, it works to support nerves in the hipppocampus rather than affecting neurotransmitters. Alongside this research are studies testing the potential to delay or prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and other disease states that affect cognitive function and the nervous system.

Lion’s Mane uniquely produces two families of compounds called erinacines and hericenones. These compounds have been found to stimulate the bodies own production of nerve growth factor (NGF).  This chemical is involved primarily in the growth, maintenance, proliferation and survival of nerve cells (neurons) in the body.  It therefore follows that Lions Mane has the ability to enhance cognitive function in the body. This type of compound is known as a nootrope.

History

About 2,000 years ago in the mountainous regions of Asia, Lions Mane could be found growing on many different tree species. In traditional Chinese medicine, it was used as a tonic for supporting overall health and longevity. Buddhist monks were said to have used Lion’s Mane mushroom powder as a tea to enhance brain power and heighten their focus during meditation. Research has shown that the Lions Mane mushroom is abundant in anti-oxidants and anti-bacterial compounds, including important polysaccharides like Beta-D-glucans.
